The South African Association of Hospital and Institutional Pharmacists (SAAHIP) Call for Abstracts
In September 2015, world leaders at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in New York witnessed the birth of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Health is a fundamental human right and a key indicator of sustainable development, with the 3rd SDG to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”. This SDG is especially pertinent to us as healthcare professionals, as of all the major health threats to emerge in the last decade, none has challenged the foundations of health as profoundly as the rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which cut across all sociodemographic groups, age groups, genders and ethnicities. If NCDs are left unabated, they may threaten to overwhelm a health system already under strain from HIV and tuberculosis.
