Abstract
What is the recommended approach for the prevention of rabies following a dog bite? As all mammals are susceptible to rabies, any infected mammal could potentially transmit rabies to humans. In South Africa, dogs are the most common source of human rabies transmission but the mongoose, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox and bats are also potential reservoirs of the virus. Mice, rats, shrews and monkeys, however, have yet to be incriminated as vectors of rabies in South Africa.
