AbstractWhilst prescription of antidepressant medication is increasing worldwide, controversy still surrounds the place of antidepressant drugs, particularly newer agents in the management of depression. This article provides an overview of antidepressant therapy, highlighting the use of different agents for the varied symptoms of depression. Antidepressant drugs are distinguished by their disparate mechanisms of action, adverse effect profiles and clinical utility. In addition, the use of these drugs in special populations such as the elderly, in pregnancy and in suicidal patients is considered. Patient counselling is suggested in order to increase patient awareness and compliance.
