AbstractDiabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic conditions characterised by raised blood glucose levels, caused by inadequate insulin secretion, reduced insulin action, or both. Type 1 diabetes was formerly known as insulindependent diabetes, and Type 2 diabetes (the focus of this article) as non-insulin dependent diabetes. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 85–95% of all diabetes cases.
